Inspired by the Amazon rainforest, Year 4 headed outdoors to investigate the layers of vegetation around our school.
Today, the children explored the different layers of vegetation in our outdoor learning area, identifying the canopy, understory and forest floor just like real rainforest researchers. They also took part in a practical maths challenge, using measuring tools to estimate the height of trees around the playground and comparing their findings to the towering giants of the Amazon. Using all of this knowledge, Year 4 worked together to recreate their very own layered rainforest around the firepit area. They used clay and natural materials to sculpt parrots, sloths, tapirs, capybaras and many more Amazon creatures, placing each one carefully into the correct layer. Their teamwork, creativity and enthusiasm brought the rainforest to life right here on our school grounds.
