This week is Keeping Safe Week at our school — a special time when we focus on helping children learn how to stay safe in different situations, both in and out of school. As part of the week’s activities, we were delighted to welcome a visitor from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), who came to talk to the children about water safety.
With summer approaching, the RNLI’s visit couldn’t have come at a better time. The children learnt how to stay safe around rivers, lakes and the sea, including the importance of wearing life jackets, spotting potential dangers and knowing what to do in an emergency.
One key part of the session was learning about the beach safety flags. The children discovered what each colour means, and why it’s so important to swim only between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards are watching.
The highlight of the visit was learning the “Float to Live” technique — a simple but life-saving skill that teaches children how to stay calm and stay afloat if they ever find themselves in trouble in the water.
There was lots of excitement when the children — and even some staff! — got the chance to try on real lifeboat crew clothing. From heavy waterproof jackets to the bright yellow helmets, everyone had fun learning just how prepared RNLI crews have to be in an emergency.
We are incredibly grateful to the RNLI for visiting and helping our pupils become more confident and informed about staying safe in and around water. It was a fun and educational experience for all!
