Launching Curiosity: Catapults and a visit from Tony Bradman

Yesterday, the Year 5 students embarked on an exciting journey into the realm of physics through a captivating science workshop: building catapults out of simple materials like lollipop sticks, rubber bands, pompoms and wooden spoons. They delved into the principles of force, motion and energy, all whilst eagerly planning and constructing their miniature siege weapons. With each snap of a rubber band and careful placement of a pom pom, the children explored tension, potential energy and projectile motion. Collaborative problem-solving and creative thinking were on full display as they experimented with different designs and configurations, learning through trial and error. Many thanks to Karen, one of our parents, for providing such a great experience!

In a serendipitous twist, the excitement of the science workshop was complemented by a special visit from acclaimed author Tony Bradman, who captivated year 5 with tales of adventure and heroism from his novel 'Viking Boy'. Turquoise and Ruby classes were transported to a world of Norse mythology and Viking lore, igniting their imaginations with vivid descriptions of epic battles and daring escapades. The children were lucky to ask questions and to have a sneak preview of Tony's new books!
