Subject Overview
At Rockmount Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them develop communication skills including key skills of speaking and listening and extends their knowledge of how language works.
Intent
At Rockmount, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Implementation
Our MFL curriculum has been designed to progressively develop skills in French. We are currently using Kapow to deliver our French lessons through which children will be taught to:
KS1 children are introduced to MFL through informal Kapow resourced lessons on French culture, basic vocabulary and maths.
Impact
"I like French because we always play lots of games and learn songs". - Ida
"I know that French is spoken in lots of different parts of the world". - Elliott
"I've enjoyed learning about food. I know how to ask for food in French." - Zayan
What is Cultural Diversity?
Cultural diversity means a society that includes people from many different backgrounds. This is exciting and should be celebrated! It is important that everyone within society feels represented and valued. This could be in television, politics, education, music and much more.
To celebrate cultural diversity day, Rockmount had a special focus on our modern foreign language; French! EYFS and KS1 sang French songs on colours, animals and numbers.
KS2 had an assembly from Miss Fryman where the children discussed what 'culture' and 'diversity' means. They also had a quiz about French around the world, as well as speaking French to their peers.
During lunchtime, the children had a translated French menu, and were encouraged to speak French on their tables using conversation prompts. Some children even had a chat in French with Sarah and Gina, our amazing kitchen staff who serve the children their lunches!
