Year group Curriculum Map

The themes have been chosen to ensure that there is opportunity to cover all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Although specific areas of the curriculum have been highlighted, we plan for all areas to enable the children to experience a variety of play-based activities during their time in Reception.

If you have any queries, please contact the Class Teacher or the Learning and Teaching Leader for this phase, Amy Carvall, or email the reception team:

Please read our half termly curriculum letters for more information.

Spring Term

Over the spring term, Reception have explored the topic of 'People Who Help Us' and 'Spring and New Life'. Throughout the spring 1 term, we  have learnt about about local heroes and their roles within our community. We were able to meet people from different jobs and ask them questions about what they do each day to help us.

During the spring 2 term, we learnt about the growth of plants and animals. The children were able to observe the life cycle of a duck and watch our very own ducklings hatch from their eggs. The children were also given the opportunity to plant seeds and watch them grow, caring for them as they do.

Autumn Term 1 - Fairy tales

What a wonderful time we have been having settling into our new environment and making new friends. Our topic this term is "Wonderful World of Fairy-tales" where we have been looking at traditional tales such as 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'The Three Little Pigs'.

We have been settling into school life by getting used to our school routines. Reception has been learning how to care for our rabbits. We even chose a new pet fish from our pond area to go in our classroom tank.

It has been lots of fun exploring our new classrooms and getting to know our teachers.

"I like seeing all the new areas in the classroom" - Ada

"I feel grown up now that I have started Reception" - Ava

"I love my new classroom and the big outdoor space with the sandpit" - Julian

Autumn Term 2 - Food and Festivals

We started our topic of 'Festivals and Celebrations' by introducing Bonfire Night to the children. We spoke about all the exciting things linked to Bonfire Night and they shared their own experiences of Bonfire Night with their friends. This term, we have been looking at and learning about how people celebrate Diwali. Diwali is the Hindu festival of light! We learnt about the story of Rama and Sita and have been making Rangoli patterns from chalk.

We thought about the importance of Remembrance Day and why it is so important to us. We discussed what respect is and why we have a two-minute silence. We also spoke about how significant a poppy is and why we wear them.

Reception have also been looking at S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). We used pumpkins to understand addition. By using different tools, we hammered in pins to the pumpkin and added them together.

Vibrancy in EYFS

See what we get up to with our vibrant Early Years curriculum. We offer a wide variety of multi-sensory experiences that are part of our day-to-day learning.
